How to Buy a Luxury Coat
A coat is the most-seen garment you own. Fabric composition and shoulder line matter more than any seasonal silhouette.
Read the composition label
Pure virgin wool is durable and warm. A wool-cashmere blend around 10 to 30 percent cashmere adds softness without sacrificing structure. Beyond 70 percent cashmere, a coat is a luxury that pills and needs shelter. Avoid anything with significant polyester content.
Weight and weave
Double-faced wool needs no lining and drapes beautifully, but requires expert construction. Melton and doubleface at 500 grams or more handle real winters; anything under 350 grams is a transitional coat, not a cold-weather one.
Cut and proportion
A single-breasted straight coat is the quiet classic; a belted wrap flatters most figures. Check that it closes comfortably over a thick sweater and that sleeves reach the base of the thumb.
Maintenance
Use a wide wooden hanger, brush weekly with a natural bristle brush, and de-pill with a comb rather than a razor. One dry clean at the end of the season is enough.
