How to Buy Luxury Tailoring
Tailoring is the discipline where construction is invisible and decisive. What sits between the cloth and the lining determines how a jacket lives on the body.
Canvas versus fusing
A full-canvas jacket has a horsehair interlining stitched in, so it moulds to your chest over time and drapes cleanly. Half-canvas is a sound compromise. Fused jackets are glued, feel flat and can bubble after cleaning. Pinch the lapel between two fingers — a floating third layer means canvas.
Choose cloth by weight
A 280 to 320 gram wool is the year-round workhorse and resists creasing. Super 150s and above feel exquisite and wear delicately — better for occasion pieces than commuting. Flannel and hopsack cover winter and summer respectively.
The fit points that matter
Shoulder and chest must be right off the rack. Sleeve length, waist suppression, hem and trouser break are all straightforward alterations. A jacket should close without strain and show a clean line down the back with no collar gap.
Care and rotation
Brush after each wear, steam rather than press, and dry clean sparingly — twice a year is plenty. Rest a suit two days between wears on a broad hanger.
