How to Buy Pre-Loved Luxury
The resale market is where the best value in luxury now lives — and where the most expensive mistakes are made. Discipline about condition and provenance is everything.
Understand condition grades
Pristine means unworn with tags. Excellent allows faint signs of use visible only up close. Very good covers light corner wear or minor interior marks. Good means visible wear that will not improve. Grades are not standardised across platforms, so read the photographs, not the label.
Authenticate properly
Buy from platforms with in-house authentication and a written guarantee. Check date codes or serials, stitch counts, font shape on heat stamps and hardware engraving depth. If the price is dramatically below market for a current-season piece, assume there is a reason.
Price against comparables
Search completed sales, not listings, for the same model, colour and condition. A fair resale price for a classic in excellent condition is usually 55 to 75 percent of retail; rare or discontinued pieces can exceed retail.
Protect yourself on returns
Only buy where returns are accepted for authentication failure. Photograph the parcel as you open it and inspect within the return window — most disputes are lost on timing, not evidence.
