How to Buy Luxury Luggage
Luxury luggage earns its price in the components you cannot see in a photograph: wheels, handles, zips and warranty.
Shell material
Polycarbonate flexes on impact and returns to shape, making it the practical hard-shell choice. Aluminium is beautiful, dent-prone and heavy but repairable for life. Coated canvas and leather trim look magnificent and demand gentler handling.
Wheels and handles are the failure points
Choose sealed double spinner wheels in a replaceable housing — Hinomoto and comparable Japanese wheels are the benchmark. Telescopic handles should have no side-to-side play and lock at several heights.
Size to the airline
Most carriers accept roughly 55 x 40 x 20 centimetres in the cabin, and expandable zips will push you over. For hold luggage, a 65 to 70 centimetre case is the sweet spot before weight limits bite.
Warranty and repairs
The best houses offer lifetime or multi-decade coverage on wheels, handles and zips, with global repair. That warranty is the actual product; register it at purchase.
